Tribe Elects New Officers
OKMULGEE-The 16th Session of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation National Council was conducted on Saturday, January 2 in the Mound Auditorium of the Tribal Capitol Complex in Okmulgee.
Seating Capacity was filled as Tribal District Representatives took the oath of office and were officially sworn in to serve the Nation and their respective areas by Muscogee (Creek) Supreme Court Judge Amost McNac.
The first act of the session was to nominate and fill the offices of Speaker, Second Speaker, and Sergeant at Arms. Nominations and vote count are conducted in public during the session. Roger Barnett, who is from the Creek District, was selected as Speaker while Sam Alexander who is from the Tulsa District,was voted as Second Speaker, and David Hill who is also from the Creek District was chosen as Sergeant At Arms.
The Speaker shall preside over the Council but shall have no vote unless the National Council is equally divided while the Second Speaker shall preside in absense of the Speaker. These representatives, as well as the Sergeant At Arms, will fill their respective offices for two years.
Thomas Yahola, who represents the Tukvpvtce District
, had served as Speaker previously.
The session saw two new representatives sworn in as well, they are Pearl Thomas who is from the Okmulgee District, and George Tiger from the Creek District. Tiger has served as Creek District Representative before while Thomas is serving her first term ever.
Presently the Tulsa District Seat A is vacant, but will be occupied following the upcoming Special General Election to be held on Saturday, January 16.
